I am back in Chicago this week after an incredible trip to London for the International Trademark Association (INTA) Annual Meeting. As a veteran attorney with 36 years of experience in intellectual property, I have found that staying at the forefront of this field requires more than just keeping up with the law — it requires maintaining a global network of trusted colleagues. This year’s event was particularly vibrant, bringing together 10,000 trademark professionals from across the globe to discuss the shifting landscape of brand protection.

The week was a whirlwind of high-level networking and insights into international IP trends, but the most memorable highlight happened outside the conference halls. I had the pleasure of joining the “Infringers” — a dedicated group of trademark lawyers who share a passion for the open road — for a two-day motorcycle ride through the English countryside. There is no better way to build lasting professional bonds than navigating the winding roads of the UK with colleagues who share the same commitment to the craft of IP law.

Bringing this global perspective back to my practice is what allows me to provide such high-caliber service to my clients. Whether I am collaborating with international associates I’ve known for decades or discussing enforcement strategies over a long ride, these connections ensure that my clients’ intellectual property is protected not just here in Chicago, but wherever their business takes them. It was a remarkable journey, and I am energized to apply these fresh global insights to our work together.
